Add peat filtration, generous quantities of dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves, oak leaves), driftwood, and other botanicals – all of which release tannins and humic acids that naturally lower pH. In water with near-zero KH, the pH will drop readily in response to these inputs. Commercial blackwater extracts can also be used to supplement. Monitor pH daily with a reliable digital meter until you are confident in the stability of your system. Avoid any decor, substrates, or filter media that contain calcium carbonate, as these will raise pH and hardness.
