Fin rot can progress rapidly in Halfmoons due to the large surface area of exposed fin tissue, so early intervention is critical.
Fin tearing is a mechanical injury rather than a disease, but it is far more common in Halfmoons than in short-finned bettas. Causes include sharp decor, rough substrate, excessive water flow, aggressive tank mates, and self-biting. Small tears usually heal on their own in clean water, but larger tears can become entry points for bacterial or fungal infection. Keeping the water pristine during healing is essential – consider slightly increasing water change frequency and adding a tannin source.
Velvet (Oodinium) is a parasitic disease that presents as a fine, gold or rust-coloured dust on the fish’s body and fins. Halfmoons’ broad fin surfaces can make velvet easier to spot than on smaller-finned fish. Treatment involves raising the water temperature slightly, dimming lights (the parasite is partly photosynthetic), and using a copper-based medication.
Ich (white spot
